EC summons Sylhet City councillor candidate

The Election Commission summoned Aftab Hossain Khan, a councillor candidate in the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation election, scheduled to be held on June 21, on the charge of breaking the electoral code of conduct.
Sylhet regional election office’s media cell coordinator Syed Kamal Hossain on Monday said that following allegation the rival councillor candidate of ward number 7 Sayeed Md Abdullah, the election commission served Aftab a notice to appear in person in room number 314 of the EC on Wednesday at 3:00pm with a written statement explaining why his candidature would not be cancelled or legal action would not be taken against him for breaking Section 30 and according to Sections 31 and 32 of the City Corporation Election Code of Conducts 2016.
On Saturday, councillor candidate Sayeed filed a case with the Biman Bandar police station against incumbent councillor Aftab, also president of the city unit of the Swechchhasebak League and some 25 of Aftab’s supporters. On Friday, Abdullah also submitted a written complaint to the Sylhet City Corporation election’s returning officer Faysal Quader, also the regional election officer, on the same ground. The councillor aspirant Abdullah complained that some 25 armed miscreants on 10 to 12 motorcycles led by Aftab Hossain Khan came in front of the gate of his house at about 6:00am on May 6.
