Container, cargo handling at Ctg Port marks significant rise in 2014

Container and cargo handling at the country’s prime seaport, the Chittagong Port, has marked a significant rise in the year 2014.
Sources in the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) said that they handled more than 1.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers and 50 million tonnes of cargo during the year.
They also said that the figure was 1.54 million TEUs of containers and 44.26 million tonnes of cargo in 2013.
The growth of handling of both cargo and container is witnessing a remarkable rise every year, which they said, is a good omen for the national economy.
The CPA sources disclosed that 1.41 million TEUs of containers were handled in 2012 while the figure was 1.39 million of TEUs in 2011 and a total of 1.34 million TEUs in 2010.
The same record was also reported in the handling of cargo.
The sources said that a total of 40.09 million tonnes of cargo were handled in 2012; 44.89 million tonnes in 2011 and 41.18 million tonnes in 2010.
The TEU is an inexact unit of cargo capacity used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals. It is based on the volume of a 20-foot-long (6.1 m) intermodal container.
The statistics reported, 3.96 million tonnes of export cargo were handled in 2009; 4.51 million tonnes in 2010; 4.98 million tonnes in 2011; 4.72 million tonnes in 2012; 5.19 million tonnes in 2013 and 7.15 million tonnes in 2014.
The Chittagong Port Authority had been constructed 127 years back as a General Cargo Berth, container handling started since 1977 with only 6 TEUs of container that has now reached to 1.7 million TEUs in 2014.
For this reason, the CPA has already constructed the New Mooring Container terminal at a cost of Tk 737 crore including a 1000 metre long berth and back up facilities on 65 acres of land.
According to CPA sources, with the successful implementation of the project, the Chittagong Port will be able to handle more 5 lakh TEUs annually than the existing capacity.
With the implementation of the project the container ship handling capacity of the Chittagong Port will be doubled.
It may be mentioned that the CPA had 13 General Cargo Berth (GCB) for handling of general cargo. Of them, six jetties have now been used for handling of container vessel along with the existing Container terminal with the capacity of handling three container vessels.
The CPA sources said the movement of container ships in the Chittagong Port has been increased remarkably in the wake of the world-wide containerisation of maritime trade.
They said a total of 947 container vessels were handled in Chittagong port in 2013 while 1047 in 2014.
