The High Court has observed that the persons who are involved and engaged in politics should not run after money and properties.
If politicians belong to a huge amount of properties and money, they have to spend a lot of time of their life to sustain the wealth and in that case they would have a little time for ensuing welfare of the people and the country as well, also observed the HC.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the observation while delivering the verdicts on the appeal petitions in two graft cases.
The HC bench on Tuesday upheld the trial court verdict that sentenced BNP leader Amanullah Aman for 13 years’ jail and his wife Sabera Aman for three years’ jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
It also upheld another trial court verdict that handed down nine years’ jail sentence to another BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmood Tuku in a graft case.
Later, they filed appeal petitions challenging the lower court verdicts.
In the observation the High Court also said, “There are many ways and means to make money and properties resorting to lawful businesses and other professions, but the politics and politicians do not come within the purview of a profession to make a huge amount of money and properties in their name and in the name of their dependents.”
“The politicians engage in politics with a view to sacrificing themselves for
the welfare of the people and the country and it is a kind act of great sacrifice and dedication for the well-being of the people and the country as well. The politicians being ‘custodian’ cannot be ‘spoiler’.”
The court said, “Corruption affects people across all genders, ages and races and it hits poor and vulnerable groups the hardest. The people of the country particularly the responsible stakeholders should set a positive example, showing that they are not only victims of corruption, but also the key players in the struggle against it.”
“The people of this country along with the stakeholders should have taken up the fight, regardless of adverse circumstances and they should stand for a stronger message. ..There must be an effective and strong system to be developed to bring the corrupt people to book, there must be a responsibility to give account and there must be action to be taken following the provisions of law.”
