BNP leader Nipun Roy gets anticipatory bail

Staff Reporter  :
The High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to BNP leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury for three months in a case filed in connection with an Awami League-BNP clash in Keraniganj on May 26 in 2023.

The HC asked Nipun, a member of BNP’s central executive committee, to surrender before the lower court concerned in the three months.

The Bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order following a petition filed by Nipun seeking bail in the case.

Earlier, Nipun Roy, on a wheelchair and with part of her head bandaged, appeared before the HC Bench for bail.

The accused BNP leader, who has been admitted to the Islami Bank Hospital, went to the HC by an ambulance in the morning.

Lawyers Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Md Bodruddoza Badal appeared for Nipun during hearing of the petition, while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukdar represented the State.

Later Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukdar said that a decision would be taken after consulting with the Attorney General whether an appeal will be moved before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC order of bail.

Sumon Miah, a local AL activist, filed the case with Keraniganj Model Police Station on May 27 after the clash on May 26 that left around 50 people injured.
