Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) -Citizens for Good Governance said 29.73 per cent candidates of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls are convicted in cases.
It made to this remark after scrutinizing 333 candidates of Mayor, Counsallor and reserved women seats for GCC election.
SHUJAN presented it at a press conference held at Gazipur press club on Monday.
The civic organization said out of eight GCC mayoral candidates two are still accused in case. They are Jatiya Party (JaPa) mayoral candidate MM Niaz Uddin and independent candidate Sarker Shanur Islam.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Awami League (AL) nominated mayoral candidate Md Azmat Ullah Khan was accused in three cases earlier while he is now free from any case burden. Moreover, there are 246 candidates for general ward counsallor where 84 were convicted in cases while 42 candidates were accused previously and 28 candidates are still remained and were accused.
Furthermore, 79 women are contesting for reserved woman counsalor seats. Of them are still accused in criminal case while three were convicted.
Out of a total of 333 candidates contesting for the three positions, 99 have or have had cases against them currently, 47 in the past and 29 in both cases. Section 302 cases against 9 people currently and against 5 people in the past.
According to the SHUJAN, in 2023 GCC polls, the convicted candidates have been increased comparing with 2018 polls. It is alarming, added SHUJAN.
