DU teacher demands extension of Govt cancelling election

DU Correspondent :
Dhaka University (DU) Professor AKM Jamal Uddin has proposed extending the tenure of the current Parliament and government for another five years without holding the upcoming general elections.

AKM Jamal Uddin, Prof. of Sociology Department, gave the call on Monday while addressing a human chain of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) protesting an alleged death threat issued to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by Rajshahi district BNP Convener Abu Sayeed Chand from a rally of his party.

The DU professor argued that the National Parliament could not function properly for two years due to the pandemic.

At that time, the government, people and various institutions could function properly and the country was not properly managed. Therefore it is necessary to extend the tenure of the parliament and government by five years without election.

The human chain was held in front of Aparajeya Bangla of the university where about hundreds of teachers of DUTA along with the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) took part. They said that it’s not only a death threat to the PM but a deep-rooted conspiracy.

“There is no language to condemn the death threat given to the Prime Minister. The threat is not only the statement of a district level leader, it is a part of a deep conspiracy. It is also an indication of formulating their blueprint and starting heinous activities,” DU Vice-Chancellor said.

Condemning the death threat, the DUTA leaders demanded immediate arrest of the BNP leader and exemplarypunishment to him.

DU Pro-vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Muhammad Samad termed Sheikh Hasina a symbol of Bangladesh’s existence said, “Those who are trying to push this country back by killing her will have no mercy. We will resist any conspiracy to kill Bangabandhu’s daughter even if it required to sacrifice our lives.”

Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal said, “The person who threatened the Prime Minister was not uttering a few words. It is the language of a political party. So, the government along with the people has to think about this political which is constantly advocating for murder and anarchy.”

DU Treasurer Dr. Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, DUTA President Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and general secretary Professor Dr. Zeenat Huda, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Zia Rahman, former proctor professor AKM Golam Rabbani and others were also present at the protest rally.

Earlier, on Sunday night, the DU Chhatra League staged a rally to protest the alleged threat to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
