‘Global Accessibility Awareness Day’ observed in Dhaka

In order to focus on awareness of digital accessibility and inclusion for the people with disabilities and impairments the ICT Division’s Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Program and social purpose organization Friendship on Thursday celebrated the Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) in Dhaka.

The celebration program was organized at the a2i Multipurpose meeting room of the ICT Tower in the capital.

Md Shamsul Arefin, Secretary of the ICT Division, attended the program as the chief guest, while Ahmed Toufiqur Rahman, Deputy Director of Friendship, was present as the special guest in the program. Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir, Project Director (Additional Secretary) of the a2i program, presided over the event, while Manik Mahmud, Program Specialist Innovation of the a2i, moderated the event.

In his speech, Md Shamsul Arefin highlighted the achievements in implementing the Smart Bangladesh Vision and emphasized the need for an inclusive digital government service system. He assured full co-operation in implementing the National Web and e-Services Accessibility Guidelines and making websites and digital services accessible for all including persons with disability.

The event included informative sessions and practical demonstrations by experts from a2i and Friendship. Vashkar Bhattacharjee, a National Consultant (Accessibility) at the a2i, showcased accessibility websites and digital services in Bangladesh while highlighting the barriers that still exist.
