ACC summons suspended Gazipur mayor Jahangir Alam

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Md Jahangir Alam for an inquiry about his wealth.
In the summoned letter, ACC deputy director requested Jahangir Alam to appear before it on May 21 and 22, a top source of the anti-graft body confirmed this on Wednesday.

On the other hand, ACC Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain said there is no relation with GCC polls and Jahangir Alam summons.
He said it while talking with newsmen at ACC Segunbagicha headquarters on Wednesday.
Md. Mahbub Hossain said as per High Court (HC) direction, ACC started to investigate two

allegations which were filed against expelled GCC mayor Jahangir in 2021 and 2022.
ACC secretary said related people’s statements have recorded and paper and other document collected on the issue. Investigation almost ended where Jahangir’s statement needed. For that ACC summoned him to appear before the ACC.

He further stated that no relations with GCC polls and Md Jahangir Alam summons.
According to the ACC, Jahangir Alam allegedly misappropriated crores of taka in various development projects of the city corporation and transactions through fake bank accounts.

ACC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Mohammad Shafiullah Adnan said there are allegations against him of embezzlement and acquisition of illegal assets through irregularities and corruption.
He said that the High Court ordered an investigation into the complaints.
For that, he has been asked to appear at the ACC head office on May 21 and 22 and give his statement.
In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.
In a meeting held on November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident, which was followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.
The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.
He had been pardoned and reinstated into the party in January, but the Awami League Central Executive Committee on Monday expelled him once more for disobeying the party’s decision yet again.
