Bangladesh Under-17 Women’s Handball team emerged the champions of the Under-17 Group of the Bangabandhu IHF Challenge Trophy Women’s defeating their stronger opponents India Under-17 Women’s Handball team by 46-43 goals in a hard-fought final at Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium on Wednesday. It is the first international title for Bangladesh in any handball competition.
The first half was locked by 20-20 goals.
Skipper Marfe of Bangladesh top-scored with 15 goals and her teammate Runa Layla netted 14 goals and their teammate Tania scored 10 goals and their teammate Dipa Rani netted five goals. Renukar of India pulled off 16 goals.
Earlier, Bangladesh Under-17 Women’s Handball team lost to India Under-17 Women’s Handball team in their group phase match at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Under-19 Women’s Handball team lost to India Under-19 Women’s Handball team by 48-17 goals in the final at the same venue on the same day. India clinched the championship title of Under-19 Women’s Group.
Coach of Bangladesh Under-17 Women’s Handball team Dalia Akter said, ” I expected that my team will show gimmick. They did it in the final. I could not beat India in my life, when I was a player of Bangladesh Women’s Handball team. It is a tough task to overcome India in any discipline. It tougher in handball. My girls did it in the final.”
Skipper Marfe said, ” I am very happy. I giving thanks to my Coach, teammates, officials and the spectators. Today I good number of spectators came to the stadium to watch the finals. They gave us a good support to us.”
Marfe of Bangladesh was adjudged the Player of the Tournament of the Under-17 Women’s Group, while Chetna Sharma of India was adjudged the Player of the Tournament of the Under-19 Women’s Group.
After the final matches, Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association Syed Shahed Reza distributed the prizes among the winners. President of Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) Nurul Fazal Bulbul, General Secretary of BHF Asaduzzaman Kohinoor and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Tournament Aminul Islam were present at the time.
