‘Mia Bhai’ famed famous Bangladeshi film actor Akbar Hossain Pathan, popularly known by the screen name Farooque, died on Monday
at 8:30am (Bangladesh time)
at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while
undergoing treatment.
Farooque started his acting career at the age of 23. In 1971, he made his debut in Bengali cinema by acting in the movie ‘Jolchhobi’ directed by H Akbar. His acting career took a turning point to play in supporting roles in 1973 with Khan Ataur Rahman’s ‘Abar Tora Manush Ho’ and in 1974 with Narayan Ghosh Mita’s ‘Alor Michhil’.
In 1975, Farooque made a permanent place in the hearts of the audience for acting in the movies ‘Sujon Sokhi’ and ‘Lathiyal’. This actor also won the National Film Award for this movie.

‘Abar Tora Manush Ho’
‘Abar Tora Manush Ho’ was released in 1973 directed by legendary film director Khan Ataur Rahman. In addition to Farooque, others who acted in this movie – Raisul Islam Asad, Babita, Sarkar Feroz and Khan Ataur Rahman.
The movie was a story of patriotism of seven young freedom-fighters in a college named ‘Bongobani’ those who played a role in the reconstruction of the country with the oath of patriotism even after the liberation war.
‘Sujon Sokhi’
‘Sujon Sokhi’ released in 1975 is a commercially successful and popular romantic film in Bengali cinema. Famous filmmaker Khan Ataur Rahman directed the movie under the pseudonym of Promod Kar. Produced by Janata Chitro Project, the story and dialogues of this movie were written by Amzad Hossain and the screenplay was written by director Khan Ata himself.
The story of the separation of two brothers due to a family dispute and their reunion is presented in this movie. Farooque and Kabori Sarwar played the title roles in it. The movie also starred Khan Ataur Rahman, Inam Ahmed, Rawshan Jamil, Sumita Devi, etc. The movie won three awards in the first edition of the National Film Awards.
In 1994, cinematographer Shah Alam Kiran recreated the movie ‘Sujon Sokhi’ with the pair of late actor Salman Shah and actress Shabnur.
‘Lathiyal’
The movie ‘Lathiyal’ was released on 22 August in 1975. Director Narayan Ghosh Mita has produced and directed the movie. Apart from Farooque, the movie also stars Anwar Hossain, Rosy Afsari and Babita.
The movie won the best film award in six categories at the first edition of the National Film Awards. Besides, the movie won awards in the Best Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Film Editing categories.
‘Sareng Bou’
The movie ‘Sareng Bou’ was released in 1978. The movie was directed by filmmaker Abdullah Al Mamun. The song titled ‘Ore Nil Doriya’ rendered by Abdul Jabbar in this movie, produced by Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, became very popular.
This movie is based on the life struggle of the people of the coastal region of Bangladesh and Farooque, Kabori, Ariful Haque, Zahirul Haque, Bilkis, Bulbul Islam, Dolly Chowdhury and many others acted in this movie. Bangladesh’s noted music director Alam Khan was music director of this movie.
‘Golapi Ekhon Traine’
Amzad Hossain directed movie ‘Golapi Ekhon Traine’ was released in 1978. Apart from Farooque, the movie also starred Babita, Anwar Hossain, Rosy Samad, Rawshan Jamil, ATM Shamsuzzaman, etc.
The movie was screened at the Moscow International Film Festival. At that time, the legendary director Mrinal Sen praised the movie.
This movie won 11 categories at the 4th National Film Awards including the Best Motion Picture Award.
Subsequently, director Amzad Hossain made two sequels to this movie – ‘Golapi Ekhon Dhakai’ (1995) and ‘Golapi Ekhon Bilate’ (2010) and a docu-fiction titled ‘Golapira Ekhon Kothai?’
