Record Tk 5.60cr found in Pagla Mosque charity boxes

The eight charity boxes of the 255 years old Pagla Mosque, situated at the Narshundha riverbank in Kishoreganj town, has received record donations amounting to over Tk 5,59,70689 in the 119 days before they were reopened on Saturday.

Foreign currencies and gold jewellery were also found in donation boxes.

The boxes were opened on Saturday at about 9:00 am and after the money was put in 19 sacks the counting continued all day long. In presence, at least 8 executive magistrates, hundred police and ansar led by ADM Kazi Mohua Momtaj.

The Pagla Mosque, recognised as one of the most profitable religious institutions in the country.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Kishoreganj and Pagla Mosque Managing Committee President Md. Abul Kalam Azad told The New Nation that, the mosque received
Tk 5.60 crore with gold jewellery and foreign currency Kishoriganj’s DC also said, an initiative has been taken to build a beautiful Islamic Complex centering the Pagla Mosque.

This work will start soon and 60 thousands worshipers will be able to pray together in the complex, the initial cost for construction has been estimated Tk 115 crore.
Earlier on January, 07 over Tk 418,16744 was found after opening the charity boxes.

Many devotees are drawn to the mosque from across the country, inspired by those tales and their personal beliefs. Their donations are deposited into those eight donation boxes. Usually, the boxes are opened every three months in the presence of administrative officers and mosque administration committee members, who count and deposit the money into a bank.

Other offerings, such as poultry and domestic animals, are auctioned once a week.
Mahmud Parvez, General Secretary of Pagla Mosque Management Committee and Mayor of Kishoreganj Municipality said, “The money received from devotees have been kept at the Rupali Bank’s Kishoreganj corporate branch, while gold jewellery has been kept in a safe vault along with the previous donations of jewellery. The value of total money and jewellery received from donations are yet to be calculated.
