124 women raped in last 3 months : ASK

A total of 124 women were raped across the country since January to March in 2023, according to the latest data of rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK). Among the victims, 12 were killed and one committed suicide after rape, the data also showed.

A total of 89 cases were filed in the rape incidents and no information of case filing over 35 incidents was found. Apart from this, 34 attempts to rape were made by the culprits, the data also read.

In the year 2022, a total of 936 women were raped across the country. Among the victims, 47 were killed and 7 committed suicide after rape. The number of rape victims was 1321 in the year 2021. Among the victims, 47 were killed and 9 committed suicide after rape.

Failure of the criminal justice system to promptly hold trial and impose punishment upon the offenders if they found guilty is the main cause of continuous violence against woman, in spite of the legislature’s endeavor to enact stringent laws, said Supreme Court lawyer and also human rights activist Barrister HM Shanjid Siddique.

Most of the cases of violence against woman are settled out of the courts or that the offenders intimidate the witnesses which impedes the proceedings against them are major bars to reduce the violence, added the lawyer.

Domestic violence victimised a total of 116 women since January to March in 2023. Among the victims, 50 women were murdered by their husbands, 10 were murdered by husbands’ family members, 8 murdered by own family and 30 committed suicide.

A total of 40 women were sexually harassed by this period. Among the victims, 29 women were assaulted by the stalkers and one was injured by them. A total of 8 women committed suicide after being harassed by the stalkers. A total of 65 male were also sexually harassed by this time, the data showed.

A total of 32 women were victimized due to dowry related violence throughout the first quarter of 2023. At least 13 women were killed by physical torture and one committed suicide after being physically tortured for the issue. A total of 24 cases were reported over the dowry related violence and no information was found over the 8 incidents of violence.

One woman was victimised due to fatwa and salish and no incident of acid attack was reported by this time.

Since January to March in 2023, different kinds of violence made victim a total of 225 children who are under 18. A total of 75 children were raped, attempt to rape was taken for 25 children including three boy children. A total of 35 students were tortured by their teachers and 4 children were sexually harassed by their teachers and 8 children were gone missing by this period.
