Remittance inflow from Bangladeshis migrants enfolds 12.8 per cent households of the country while Chattogram division has the highest percentage of households receiving remittance from overseas workers, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ Sample Vital Statistics’ (SVRS) survey.
Among the households receiving remittances
mainly concentrated in rural areas, as per the survey conducted by Monitoring of the Situation of Vital Statistics of Bangladesh (MSVSB), a project of BBS, based on year 2021.
The survey disclosed, 14 percent of households in rural areas receive foreign remittances. The rate is 7.42 percent in city corporation areas and 10 percent in municipalities or other urban areas.
According to division wise statistics based on household category, the number of households receiving expatriate income is highest in Chattogram division. One in every four households (26.2 per cent) receives foreign currency from members working abroad.
Sylhet division secured second position in receiving remittance where 24.7 per cent of households receive expatriate income.
By contrast, Rangpur division has the lowest proportion of households receiving expatriate income. Only 2.4 per cent of households are able to catch the inflow of remittances from overseas workers.
Likewise, the data from Bangladesh Bank based on divisions and district – wise wage earners’ remittance inflow showed that after the Dhaka division, Chittagong and Sylhet division receiving more foreign remittance than other divisions in the current financial year of FY23.
The top three divisions to receive inflow of remittance in fiscal year of 2021-2022 were Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet division. Dhaka received $9.899 billion in FY22. Chittagong and Sylhet division were able to catch $5.413 billion and $2.149 billion respectively as per data from BB.
Remittance inflow in Khulna division was $0.991 billion and $.893 billion in Rajshahi in the previous fiscal year. Among divisions, Mymensingh had the lowest inflow in FY22 of $0.491 billion.
Meanwhile, in the first nine months from July to March of the current fiscal year FY23, total amount of remittance is around $ 16.03 billion. And in the financial year of 2021-2022 and 2020-2021 expatriates sent home $ 21.03 billion and $24.77 billion respectively.
