Gas smell from capital’s different areas resolved: Titas

Titas Gas authorities on Tuesday clarified that the issue of the ‘gas smell’ reported on Monday night in several areas in the capital ‘had been resolved’.

Rashidul Alam, General Manager of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, told journalists that its technical team resolved the problem by lowering pressure in gas pipelines.

“The gas pressure was reduced at system control at about 1:00am, that ultimately resolved the problem,” Rashidul said.

Earlier on Monday night, residents of several areas including Mohakhali, Rampura, Basundhara residential area, Eskaton, Rajabazar, Badda, Moghbazar, Cresent Road, Bashabo, Dhanmondi and Hazaribagh, reported gas smells on the streets.
The city dwellers feared of sudden fire incidents might be occurred from gas leakages in the areas which caused the smell in those areas.

“We have switched of our risers, the gas pipe lines, and avoided to use the burners in night after getting the gas smell. We fear of sudden fire incident from the gas leakage,” said Imtiaz Ahmed, from Mohakhali.

Several citizens have informed police stations, and several other emergency services after getting the gas smell.
Prepared Fire Service vehicles had to take place in different areas including Mohakhali and Rampura after getting the information of huge gas smell.

Fire Service officials said on Monday night that they are ready to tackle any unwanted incident in anywhere in the city.
Energy experts said that such gas smell is very dangerous matter.

“It is hazardous matter that the gas pipe lines have many small wholes which are not supposed to be. It could not be understand in normal time. But it has been identified during the Eid vacation,” said Professor Badrul Imam, Energy expert and Teacher of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday night urged people not to panic over such gas smells.

The energy ministry said in its verified Facebook page earlier Tuesday, that due to gas not being supplied to factories during Eid, gas pressure in transmission and distribution lines has increased which caused an ‘overflow’ and spread the smell in different areas.
