Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day today
Staff Reporter :
Today is Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day.
On this day in 1972, the Father of the Nation and supreme leader of the country’s Liberation War Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to the soil of an independent Bangladesh from Pakistani jail.
Although the victory in the nine-month War of Independence was achieved defeating the Pakistani forces on Dec 16 in 1971, the nation’s expectations were fulfilled with Bangabandhu’s coming home on January 10 in ’72.
The Pakistani occupation army arrested Bangabandhu from his Dhanmondi residence on road number 32 during the small hours of March 26 in
1971, minutes after he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh through a message. On that night, the Pakistani army launched a brutal crackdown in Dhaka.
Though the nation achieved victory against Pakistan, Bangabandhu was still imprisoned in a Pakistani prison. However, Pakistan, under international pressure, was forced to release him from jail on Jan 8 in 1972. After his release, Bangabandhu was flown to London.
The ruling Awami League, its associate bodies, other political parties and socio-cultural-professional organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
The AL’s programmes include hoisting of the national and party flags at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue and branch offices across the country at 6:30 am and placing of wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Dhanmondi at 7 am.
As part of the programme, a discussion meeting will be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city at 2 pm on January 12 [Monday] instead of January 10 due to ongoing Biswa Ijtema.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the discussion as the chief guest while party presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury will chair it. Eminent intellectuals and national leaders will take part in the discussion.
Marking the day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages.
