50 injured in Cumilla train derailment

At least 50 people were injured when a train derailed in Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla on Sunday evening.
Seven boogies of ‘Sonar Bangla Express’ train veered off the tracks in Hasanpur Railway Station area around 6:30 pm when it hit a parked goods-laden train.
Laksam Railway Police Station officer in-charge Jashim Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday night.
In this regards, Deputy Chief Information Officer Md. Shariful Islam said that a rail way rescue team is heading to Cumilla from Chatrogram to rescue the victim train.
According to locals, at least seven bogies of Sonar Bangla Express train derailed.
No railway officials were seen at the scene and station master Shohag fled the workplace. But the locals started the rescue operation.
Following the accident, train movement remained suspended on Dhaka-Chattogram route.
Cumilla railway insiders said due to an error occurred after a power cut at Hasanpur station, Sonar Bangla Express was diverted to platform no 4 where the freight train was already stationed.
According to another source, the freight train was stationed at the fouling mark, which is the safe boundary of the station. As per the rules, trains traveling in the same direction should only leave after clearing the line. However, it appears that the guard on duty at the station failed to provide the proper signal for the train to proceed.
