JU students block Dhaka-Aricha Highway demanding release of Samsuzzaman
News Desk :
Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged a demonstration by blocking the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar demanding the release of Prothom Alo journalist Samsuzzaman Shams.
They also demanded the withdrawal of the case filed against him and the repeal of the Digital Security Act (DSA).
Hundreds of students blocked the road at the main gate of JU at around 2:45pm on Friday.
The students left the highway around 4pm with an ultimatum to release Shams by Sunday.
The agitated students had first blocked the Dhaka-bound lane of the road, but later, the university authorities brought them to the Aricha-bound lane.
Following the road blockade, traffic movement came to a halt on the Aricha-bound lane.
Around 500 uniformed police including plainclothes police are present at the protest site. Besides, RAB members and officials of various intelligence agencies were reportedly present there.
Earlier in the day, the students took out a procession from Murad Chattar on the campus. Later, they came to the road and started protesting.
Prothom Alo reporter Samsuzzaman Shams, working in Savar near the capital Dhaka, was picked up from his house in Ambagan area near Jahangirnagar University in the early hours of Wednesday morning by the CID allegedly for publishing a fake and fabricated news.
Later he was sued under DSA on the same day and a Dhaka court sent him jail on Thursday rejecting his bail plea.
