Sonia’s crab farming continues to thrive

Sonia Akter is married to an uneducated man named Md. Aminur Rahman, who resides in Gumantali village, located in the Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district. The family consists of Sonia, her husband, and their two children- a daughter and a son. Since Sonia joined the family, they have been struggling with poverty and scarcity on a daily basis. They face difficulties in getting proper food, clothing, and healthcare, and her husband does not own any land except for a fenced house.
To begin, Sonia leased a 2-bigha plot of land and obtained a loan of BDT 30,000, which she utilized to purchase a small number of peach crabs and get started with farming. In her first round of production, she managed to make a profit of BDT 5,500, after accounting for all expenses. This success served as a source of inspiration for both Sonia and her husband, and they decided to continue with crab cultivation, gradually increasing their production and sales. As a result, Sonia’s crab farming business continued to thrive.
Sonia successfully paid off her loan four times and was able to borrow BDT 50,000. She has been diligently paying back the loan amount and is now financially stable. With the profits from her crab farming, Sonia was able to purchase land, build a house with a bakery and bathroom, and buy various furniture. Additionally, her two children are now in 5th and 9th grade, respectively. Sonia’s success has not gone unnoticed, and ten other members of her family and society hold her in high regard. Sonia has earned a respectable position in her community.
