US HR report depicts Bangladesh’s terrible situation: BNP
Staff Reporter :
BNP’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the US human rights report 2022 portrayed an “awful” picture of Bangladesh’s democratic and human rights situation.
“I felt ashamed while reading the US human rights report as it depicted that there’s no slice of democracy and human
rights in Bangladesh,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said during a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the 16th death anniversary of the party’s former Secretary General KM Obaidur Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul said the report depicted that how the people of the country have been subjected to the crossfire, extra-judicial killings, and enforced disappearances in Bangladesh.
He, however, said that the US report on Bangladesh have revealed the situation of democracy and human rights correctly.
“The report has also focused on how the rights of people have been snatched away and how journalists have lost their rights to disclose the truth,” he said.
“Such a terrible picture of the country has been revealed in the US report,” the BNP leader said.
Mirza Fakhrul said the ruling Awami League leaders are now criticising the US over the report.
“They (AL leaders) are saying the country (US) does not look at itself though it is releasing reports on the human rights situation of different countries”.
Mirza Fakhrul accused the ruling Awami League of establishing autocratic, authoritarian, and fascist regime very consciously by destroying democracy in the country.
The BNP has long been carrying out a movement to restore democracy and people’s rights in the country, braving various repressive and suppressive activities by the government, he added.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Moharraf Hossain presided over the meeting.
Dr. Khandaker Moharraf Hossain said, “The incumbent government wants to establish only one person by forgetting the other leaders contribut in to get liberation of the country”.
He praised KM Obaedur Rahman’s contribution in the liberation war.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rab, BNP leaders, Barkatullah Bulu, Abdus Salam, Amanullah Aman, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anie and Shama Obaed, among others were present.
