Staff Reporter :
Dhaka has requested to give inform on the digging of two canals to divert the water of the Teesta River through a ‘note verbal’ to the New Delhi.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen informed the journalists of the issue at the Ministry on Sunday.
The journalists asked the Foreign Secretary whether a letter was sent to India from the Ministry of Water Resources regarding the digging of canals.
In response, Masud Bin Momen said that a letter would be sent from the Ministry of Water Resources.
“We don’t know whether the Water Resources Ministry has sent letter. But our ministry has requested New Delhi through a note verbal to know about the issue of diverting water through canals,” he said.
The journalists also asked whether Dhaka had expressed any concerns through the note verbal.
In response, the Foreign Secretary said that it could have been their plan for a long time, but nothing had happened yet.
Three days ago, the State Minister for Water Resources, Zahid Faruk, had informed that an official letter would be sent to New Delhi seeking formal information on the matter of canal excavation.
Recently, the English daily The Telegraph reported that within the framework of the Teesta barrage project, the Irrigation Department of West Bengal has acquired ownership of almost 1,000 acres of land for two more canal digging. The Jalpaiguri district administration has handed over the ownership of the land to the Irrigation Department in the presence of West Bengal State Irrigation Minister Partho Bhowmik.
As per Indian media reports, there are already 42 dams constructed on the Teesta, originating from Tibbet.
