Mirza Abbas, his wife get bail in money laundering case

A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in a case filed over amassing illegal wealth of about Tk 20.76 crore in July, 2019.Earlier, the court accepted the charges brought against them after scrutinizing the case dockets and other relevant documents.
Judge Md Asaduzzaman of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court of Dhaka granted the bail after they surrendered in the court, seeking bail in the case. In the order, the court said the couple will remain on bail after submitting their passports to the court. The court fixed April 26 to hear on charge framing against them in the case.
On December 27, last year, ACC Deputy Director and the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, Nurul Huda submitted the charge sheet against Mirza Abbas and Afroza Abbas to the Senior Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka.
According to the charge sheet, Mirza Abbas was a member of Parliament, Minister and Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation from 1991 to 1995. He was the Housing and Public Works Minister from 2001 to 2006. He gathered wealth in the name of Afroza Abbas till August 16, 2007 through his alleged bribery and corruption by virtue of being a lawmaker, Mayor, and Minister.
On July 7, 2019, the former Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Mohammad Salahuddin filed the case with Shahjahanpur Police Station, alleging that Abbas had acquired assets worth about Tk 20.76 crore.
Later, the couple got bail from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court.
