England earned a hard-fought three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first One Day International (ODI) match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Wednesday.
Batting first Bangladesh scored 209 off 47.2 overs.
In reply, England cruised into the victory target making 212 for the loss of seven wickets when they had just eight balls to spare.
Bangladesh had a good start with two openers Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das put on together 33 runs before Litton (7) was trapped leg before wicket by Chris Woakes.
Opener Tamim Iqbal (23) was bowled out by Mark Wood when the home side’s score was 51 for the loss of two wickets.
After Tamim’s departure, one-down Najmul Hossain Shanto and second-down Mushfiqur Rahim repaired the damage adding together 44 runs for the third wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim (16) was caught at the deep midwicket by Wood of Adil Rashid when Bangladesh’s total was 95 for the loss of three wickets.
Third-down Shakib Al Hasan (8) was bowled out by Moeen Ali when the hosts’ score was 106 for the loss of four wickets.
Shanto and Mahudullah Riyad built another notable partnership scoring together 53 runs in the five-wicket stand before Shanto was caught at the short midwicket by Jason Roy off Rashid when Bangladesh’s total was 159 for the loss of five wickets.
Shanto hit a superb 58. His 82-ball innings was laced with six fours. It was Shanto’s maiden half-century in ODI cricket.
After Shanto’s dismissal, Bangladesh batter failed to make any notable partnership.
Riyad was caught behind by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off Wood when the hosts’ score was 162 for the loss of six wickets.
Riyad made 31 from 48 deliveries featuring three fours.
Wood, Moeen, Jofra Archer and Rashid bagged two wickets each instead of 34, 35, 37 and 47 runs respectively.
Besides, Will Jacks and Woakes took one wicket each for 18 and 28 runs respectively.
Later, Shakib gave an early breakthrough as opener Jason Roy (4) was caught at the mid-off by Tamim off the left-arm spinner when England’s score was just four.
But all went into vain as one-down Dawid Malan played the key role hitting a superb 114 (not out). He cracked four sixes and eight fours in his 145-ball innings. Malan was adjudged the Man of the Match.
Opener Phil Salt and one-down Dawid Malan mended the innings adding together 31 runs in the second wicket stand before Salt (12) was bowled out by Taijul Islam when England’s score was 35 for the loss of two wickets.
Second-down James Vince (6) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Taijul when the visitors’ total was 45 for the loss of three wickets.
Second-down Jos Buttler (9) was caught at the slip by Najmul Hossain off Taskin Ahmed when England’s score was 65 for the loss of four wickets.
One-down Malan and fourth-down Will Jacks built a worthy partnership adding together 38 runs in the five-wicket stand before Jacks (26) was caught at the deep midwicket by Afif Hossain off Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the tourists’ total was 103 for the loss of five wickets.
After Will’s departure, Malan and Moeen Ali mended the innings putting together 38 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Moeen (14) was cleanly bowled out by Miraz when England’s score was 141 for the loss of six wickets.
Chris Woakes (7) was caught at the mid-on by Tamim Iqbal off Taijul Islam when the touring side’s total was 161 for the loss of seven wickets.
Then, Malan and Adil Rashid helped their team to reach the winning spot contributing together 51 runs in the unbroken eighth wicket stand.
Rashid remained unbeaten with 17 runs.
Taijul grabbed three wickets in the space of 54 runs, while Miraz bagged a pair of wickets at the cost of 35 runs.
Taskin and Shakib took one wicket each for 26 and 45 runs respectively.
