At least one person was reportedly died in a fire that broke out on the seventh floor of a multi-storey building at Gulshan in the capital on Sunday evening.
The body was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue in an ambulance around 10pm. The deceased’s identity could not be confirmed immediately.
Meanwhile, four people were injured after jumping from the seventh floor of the building. Two of them are male and two are female.
However, their names and identities were not immediately known. They were rescued and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The residents of the building say that many people were trapped inside the building after the fire. Many are signalling the rescuers by flashing torch lights while others are calling their relatives and asking them to come to the rescue.
However, the fire service could not provide an accurate number of the people trapped in the building. So far, four people trapped in the building have been rescued, the fire service said. The fire began at 6:59pm in a 12-storey building in Gulshan-2, Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters’ media cell, said. On information, 19 firefighting units responded to the blaze. The responders are trying to tame the flames till the filing of this report at 10:20pm.
The reasons for the fire mishap and the extent of damage could not be confirmed immediately, Anwarul said.
Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam has arrived at the scene. He is directly supervising the rescue work.
