Motorcyclist killed on Dhaka-Sylhet highway

A motorcyclist was killed in Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Osmani Nagar upazila in Sylhet after a team of police chased a CNG-run auto-rickshaw that hit the motorcycle on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased is Amad Ahmed, 25, treasurer of Dayamir Bazar Merchant Association of Osmani Nagar and son of Surab Ali of Shuargaon under Dayamir union of the upazila, the police said.
Local people beat a highway police officer protesting at the killing and kept the highway blocked for more than an hour after the incident.
Local traders said that a team of the highway police launched a drive against the CNG-run auto-rickshaw for illegally running on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the afternoon.
The police chased an auto-rickshaw near Kurua Bazar area of Osmani Nagar at about 4:30pm when its driver tried to escape the police raid and smashed into a motorcycle, they added.
The biker fell off his bike when a speeding truck ran over him, the traders said.
Local people immediately blocked the highway to protest at the death and beat up a police officer after chasing his team, they added.
