Youth held with gold bars worth Tk 11.6 million

Members of law enforcement have arrested a gold smuggler from Satkhira along with 18 gold bars worth Tk 11.6 million on Monday.
The arrestee has been identified as Mithu Sardar, (23), son of one Shawkat Ali from Thanagahat area of Shahortoli of the district. Mithu was arrested from the side of Bakal Bridge adjacent to Satkhira Medical College on Monday (February 6) around 3 pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Abu Jihad Mohammad Fakhrul Alam Khan said, based on secret information, SI Shahjalal and ASI Zia stopped Mithu’s motorcycle and challenged him. At that time, 18 gold bars were found by searching the motorcycle.
According to police source, the gold bars were delicately taped to the inside of the motorcycle chassis.
OC said that Mithu admitted that he was taking the gold bars to the border area for smuggling to India.
The weight of the gold bars is 2 kg 99 grams 520 mg. The market value of which is about 1 crore 65 lakh 60 thousand taka. Legal action is pending against the arrested accused, OC added.
