Staff Reporter :
The Election Commission (EC) will announce the 12th parliamentary elections schedule in November this year.
According to the EC’s roadmap, the national polls will be held in the last week of December or the first week of January 2024.
Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman disclosed the information while speaking at the smart national identity card distribution ceremony in Shariatpur district on Saturday.
He also said that the election will be held in 50 to 70 constituencies by electronic voting machines (EVM) system.
“At least 46 per cent votes were cast in Thakurgaon in recent by-elections. People cast their votes ignoring the bitter cold, which encouraged us. Our biggest challenge is to create trust
among the people in polls and people are coming back to vote. The previous polls had created a crisis of confidence and the present EC is trying to overcome that crisis,” Anisur Rahman said.
He said that they are going to holding the next parliamentary polls with the hope that they will able to encourage the voters to vote.
The commission is also thinking of some other new steps, the Election Commissioner said, adding that he is not releasing the new ideas to the public right now and it will be public in due time.
Anisur Rahman hoped that all major political parties will take part in the next national elections and the EC will do whatever needs for holding the free, fair and credible participatory elections.
The last parliamentary election was held on December 30, 2018.
As per the roadmap, this time the boundaries of the constituencies will be redrawn. For this, the previous policy will be reviewed and a new policy will be prepared in January next year.
