Re-excavation of Sagardi Canal starts in Barishal

Barishal City Corporation(BCC) has started the re-excavation of Sagardi Canal, one of the major canal flowing inside Barishal City on Wednesday.
Corporation will construct walkway, foot-over Bridge by side of the canal after recovering from the illegal occupants of the canal-side.
BCC Mayor Serniabad Sadique Abdullah inaugurated the re-excavation and recovery work of Sagardi canal adjacent to Kirtankhola bank by running excavator on Wednesday .
At that time he said thay have started re-excavation and recovery of this canal, now it is responsibility of citizens to preserve and maintain it properly. If this project is implemented, the scenario of this area will change.
BCC mayor further said apart from this excavation work and beautification, a project of Tk 2600 cr has been submitted to the concerned ministry for digging 42 canals of the area earlier known as Venice of Bengal. If these projects are implemented, there will be no water logging in Barishal City and surrounding areas.
He said that there is another project of re-excavating canal of the Ministry of Water Resources at a cost of Tk 17 cr, but before that, the Prime Minister approved various projects including the re-excavation of Sagordi canal at a cost of Tk 130 cr. In order to avoid duplication, the project of digging a canal of the Ministry of Water Resources of Tk 17 cr has been approved and BCC did not raise any objection.
In a video presentation on behalf of the BCC, it was mentioned that ‘Sagardi Canal Digging and Sloping Project will restore water flow by digging this 7.15 km long canal as well as 1.35 km cycle lane along the canal, including walkway, foot over bridge, while Greening and beautification work will be done.
Under the ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Urban Development Programme of Barishal City’, this project worth Tk 13 crore, including canal digging at a cost of Tk 8.54 crore and beautification work at a cost of Tk 4.24 crore, is scheduled to be completed in July 2023, said Barishal City Corporation chief executive officer Farooq Ahmed.
VC of Barishal University Professor Sadekul Arefin said that once this project is completed, Barishal will once again become the Venice of Bengal.
Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saiful Islam spoke among others also addressed in the programme.
