Nine die in Sylhet bus collision, seven killed in Bogura highway accident

A total of 16 people were killed and dozens injured in two separate road accidents involving passenger buses in Sylhet and Bogura on Friday, after one bus collided head-on with another while the other veered off the road and crashed into an electric pole.

Nine people were killed and more than 30 others injured when two passenger buses collided head-on in the Dayamir area of Osmaninagar in Sylhet at around 7:30am.

Five of the deceased were identified as Saptam Roy Priyam, 22, son of Uttam Roy of Sobhanighat in Sylhet city; Jaifa, 4, daughter of Jahangir of the South Surma Police Station area; Baul singer Peheli Bhairabi, daughter of Babul Mia of Chandiber in Kishoreganj; Haji Saiful Islam, 50, son of the late Safiuddin of Kishoreganj; and Abul Hossain, 44, son of the late Barek Mia of Bogdahar in Brahmanbaria.

The identities of the remaining victims could not be confirmed immediately.

Among the injured, 13 were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. They were identified as Wab, 45; Mansur, 34; Atikul Islam, 48; Babul, 40; Mofiz Mia, 55; Sajid Nur, 45; Nurunnahar, 40; Mukhtar Hossain, 65; Jahangir, 28; Afzal, 30; Afroza, 38; Montu, 30; and Raju, 55.

Osmaninagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Morshedul Alam Bhuiyan said the accident occurred when a Bengal Paribahan bus and a Unique Paribahan bus collided head-on in the area.

“The bodies were recovered from the scene and sent to the morgue of Osmani Medical College Hospital,” the OC said.

In a separate accident in Bogura, seven people were killed after a passenger bus lost control and crashed into a roadside electric pole in the Erulia area on the Bogura-Naogaon regional highway at around 5:00am.

According to local residents, the Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan bus was travelling from Dhaka to Naogaon when it veered off the road near Erulia Bazar before hitting the electric pole.

Three victims, all workers, died on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital.

Bogura Sadar Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam Shafik said legal procedures were underway.

The injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment.

The identities of the victims in the Bogura accident could not be confirmed immediately.
