At least six persons were killed in a tragic road accident when an ambulance hits a truck on the Dhaka-Bhanga highway in Naodoba area under Zajira upazila of Shariatpur early Tuesday.
The accident took place around 4 am.
The victims have been identified as Jahanara Begum, 55, a patient, her daughter Lutfun Nahar Lima, 30, ambulance driver Jilani, 28, his helper Rabiul Islam, 26, health worker Fajle Rabbi, 28 and journalist Masud Rana, 30.
According to locals and police, the ambulance was coming to Dhaka from Barishal with a patient and her relatives. When the vehicle reached near the toll plaza of Padma Bridge at Zajira point, it lost control and rammed the truck from behind around 4am. At that time, six people died on the spot. The truck driver fled away after the accident. Suruj Miah, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Padma Bridge South Police Station, confirmed the matter to the media saying that we initially believe that the accident took place when the ambulance driver fell asleep.
The deceased were first sent to Zajira Upazila Health Complex and then to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy, SI added.
