Initiate enquiry over Bangladeshis property in Dubai
THE High Court has directed the authorities concerned to conduct an investigation into the allegations of purchasing properties by 459 Bangladeshi nationals in Dubai and suppressing information about those. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFUJ) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police have been directed to conduct the enquiry and to submit progress reports to the HC in 30 days.
In 18 months of the Covid pandemic, Bangladeshi nationals have topped real-estate and housing investment in Dubai – a city known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a lively nightlife scene, according to Dubai public document and newspaper ranking. Since the investment worth 123 million UAE Dirham, (around Tk 288 crore), did not land on the Persian Gulf coast city through the official channel, it is assumed to be dirty.
Many people in the country had deep pockets even amid the virus shock, and they felt their wealth was not secure in Bangladesh and a second home means a safe exit to a new and luxurious life from a chequered past. With a legal vacuum about foreign investment secrecy and easy residential offers, Dubai matches with their potential destinations. An investigative outlet recently reported that Mohammed Abdus Sobhan Miah, close to the government head, secretly owned $4m worth of real estate in New York. Meanwhile, WASA managing director Taqsim A Khan illegally owned 14 apartments in the USA
The recent media report owning illegal estates in USA, Canada, UK, Dubai by government-backed bureaucrats, politicians, businesspeople and law enforcers have dragged the attention of countrymen, however, the government machinery is completely nonchalant to the capital flights, fund embezzlement, corruption money destination as many think the government itself is related with the crimes. Not any investigation is initiated by the government as the accused are near the ruling family and the party. No economy survived in this way, maybe ours will not.
