President Abdul Hamid’s second consecutive term will end on April 23.
On April 24, 2013, Abdul Hamid took office for the first time as president. On April 24, 2018, he assumed responsibility as president for a second term.
Earlier, Law Minister Anisul Haque said since Abdul Hamid has served two terms as president, he will not be eligible for re-election according to the constitution.
The election commissioner did not comment on when the election will be scheduled. “According to the law, the chief election commissioner will talk to the speaker regarding the schedule,” he said.
Article 123 of the Constitution states- if the post of the president becomes vacant due to the expiry of the term, an election shall be held to fill the vacant post within 60 to 90 days before the date of expiry of the term.
Section VII of the President’s Act, 1991 states that the election officer shall examine the nomination papers on the Election Day. If there is only one candidate and his/her nomination paper is considered valid, the commission will declare him/her as president.
However, if there are multiple candidates, the EC will call for an election. The chief election commissioner, who serves as an election officer according to the Presidential Election Act, will organise the polling in the parliament.
Members of parliament will write the name of the preferred candidate on the prescribed ballot paper and submit it with their signature.
