Reduce risk of brucellosis transmission in dairy farms stressed

Brucellosis is the most widespread bacterial zoonotic
disease throughout the world. In animals: mainly affects reproduction and fertility, with abortion and reduced milk yield. In humans: the clinical picture resembles many other febrile diseases, but sacroiliitis and hepato-splenomegaly are the most prominent. This disease has been reported to be associated with bovine infertility for the first time in 1967 from Bangladesh. The overall prevalence of brucellosis in cattle and buffalo were reported to be 3.7% and 4% respectively. The incidence of brucellosis in large dairy herds, its risk factors and transmission dynamics need to be studied for the complete epidemiologic understanding of this disease in Bangladesh, said Prof Dr Md Siddiqur Rahman, Principal Investigator of the project its inception workshop was held Veterinary Science Faculty Conference Hall of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU), Mymensingh on Wednesday . Prof Dr Md Abdul Awal, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science was present as the Chief guest while Professor Dr Md Mostafizer Rahman, AMR Surveillance Expert, Dr Ali Akbar Bhuiyan, Principal Scientific Officer, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, Dr Md. Shakif-Ul-Azam, DPD, LDDP were the special guests.
Prof Dr Md Siddiqur Rahman, Principal Investigator presented the project plan and activities and Prof Dr AKM Anisur Rahman briefly described the justification and objectives of the research project. Prof Dr Md Aminul Islam Head, Department of Medicine presided over the session.
The project was funded by Livestock Dairy Development Project (LDDP), DLS, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to study in eight government dairy farms in Bangladesh.
