Passengers irked after not getting metro rail tickets
News Desk :
Passengers eager to board the metro rail started demonstrating on Friday after not getting tickets as the authorities locked the Uttara station entrance ahead of closing time.
They had been flocking to the station since the morning, the second day of the sale of tickets for the Uttara-Agargaon section.
The electric trains, a milestone in the country’s communication sector, were primarily scheduled to run from 8am to 12pm. However, hundreds of thousands of passengers were seen waiting to board the trains even at 11:30am. When the authorities locked the gate of the station, the passengers started to lose their patience.
They complained about the authorities locking the gate 30 minutes early when the last
departure was scheduled for 12pm. According to the passengers, many of them came on the first day to board the metro rail, but tickets was not available as there was a heavy rush of people.
Many people came from outside Dhaka and had been waiting since morning but they did not get their tickets either.
Among the irked passengers were those who boarded the train from Agargaon. With the aim of going to Agargaon again, they were waiting at the Uttara station.
Police and Ansar personnel were forced to withdraw from the entrance as the number of protesters increased and started banging on the station gate.
When asked about this, Shahidul Islam, in charge of security at the Diabari station, said there was no time to pick up more passengers therefore it was decided to operate the last train with the passengers who were already inside.
Since the inauguration of the metro rail, people have been thronging both Uttara and Agargaon stations to experience the country’s first electric trains.
People from all walks of life with joyous expressions and excitement rushed into the stations to collect single-trip tickets and MRT pass cards on the maiden day. Even when the ticket machines faltered at both stations, people still waited in long queues to make the trip. The second day was no different either.
