Number of livestock, poultry increases

The number of livestock and poultries including cows, buffalo and chickens has been increased significantly, according to the final report of Agriculture Census 2019 published on 27 December 2022 accomplished by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Total number of cows obtained in the Agriculture Census 2019 after calculating rural and urban households is 2.94 crore which was 1. 63 crore in 2008. The number of roosters, chickens and ducks were more than 27.38 crore as against 13.72 crore in 2008 census.
Numbers of Buffaloes was increased by .95 crore in 2019 compared with the previous year. The gross number of goat in 2018 was 1.63 crore and 1.95 crore in 2019.
Meanwhile, in the Fiscal Year 2019 – 20 aggregate demand of Meat was 72.97 Lakh Metric Ton and the production was 76.74 Lakh Metric Ton.In the same FY, gross shortage of milk production was high as the demand of milk was 152.02 Lakh Metric Ton and total production was 106.80 Lakh Metric Ton.
The Contribution of Livestock in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019-2020 was 1.43 percent with the growth rate of 3.04 percent.
Additionally, the report said the number of agriculture based households in the rural areas is 160.48 lakh while 8.33 lakh in the urban areas.
Earlier, the Planning Minister, MA Mannan and State Minister for Planning, Dr Shamsul Alam were present to unveil the cover of the final report of the Agriculture Census-2019. Presided over by Director General of BBS Md Motiar Rahman, Project Director Alauddin Al Azad made a power-point presentation on the findings of the Census. Such agriculture census was carried out in the country in 1960, 1977, 1983-84, 1996 and 2008.
