Goats farming make couple self-sufficient in Bhangura

A couple has become self-sufficient by farming goats in Bhangura Upazila of Pabna. They are Ashiq (30) Khandoker and Kajal Khandoker (26). Ashik is the son of Amin Khandkar of Ruposi village of Ashtamanisha union of the upazila. Ashiq’s wife’s name is Kajal. After the two got married, there was shortage in the family. Finally, in 2021, the couple bought five goats for Tk 50,000 and started the farm.
 After six months, their five goats gave birth to ten kids. This is how the number of goats in the farm started increasing. Now they own 41 goats. The estimated value of which is 4 and a half lakh taka. They expect thirteen more goats to give birth to at least 26 kids in a few days.
Ashiq and Kajal, the owners of the farm, said that their dream of becoming self-reliant by rearing goats is going to be successful. However, due to the increase in food prices, the farm costs have also increased. Due to the fear of outbreak of various diseases including PPR in the winter season, instead of raw grass, high priced wheat husk and rice powder is being fed. Because of this, the cost of production has increased. Still, the farmer couple hopes to earn a lot of money by selling twenty castrated goat in a few days.
Upazila Animal Resources Officer (Acting) Dr. Mahfuza said, due to the good market of castrated goat meat, its farmers can also benefit. Also, as a goat gives birth to more than one kid, its number increases rapidly. Besides, there is the facility of taking loans at low interest to encourage goat rearing. Along with that, government vaccines are also provided free of cost to prevent diseases, he said.
