1.812kg gold seized near HSIA

Customs intelligence officials have seized 1.812kg of gold worth around Tk 3.73 crore from a vehicle near the outer roundabout of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, after its driver abandoned it and fled during a search.

The seizure was made after officials of the Air Freight Circle of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID), acting on a tip-off, stopped the vehicle with assistance from intelligence agencies present at the scene. The driver, identified as Md Shamim Miah, fled after abandoning the vehicle when officials moved to inspect it, according to CIID officials.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 14 gold bars and 12 pieces of gold sheets weighing 1.812kg in total.

The gold was valued at around Tk 3.73 crore. Officials also recovered three mobile phones, including a new iPhone 17 Pro and two used phones, Tk 1,07,585 in cash, a used laptop and eight debit and credit cards issued by different banks. Two driving licences and a National Identity Card were also found among the items recovered from the vehicle.
