Bangladesh scored 227 in the first innings against India on the first day of the first Test match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Thursday. India were at the stumps at 19 for the loss of none. KL Rahul was on 3, while Shubman Gill was on 14 before the bails were drawn for the opening day play.
Bangladesh led by 208 runs.
Mominul Haque played the key role for Bangladesh to make a modest total. He notched up a painstaking 84. His 157-ball innings was ornamented with 12 fours and a sixer. It was Mominul’s 16th half-century in Test cricket.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh made a good start as the two openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan put on together 39 runs in the opening stand before Zakir (15) was caught at the fourth slip by KL Rahul off Jaydev Unadkat.
After Zakir’s dismissal, Shanto could stay at the crease for a short period as he (24) was trapped leg before wicket by Ravichandran Ashwin when Bangladesh’s score was 39 for the loss of two wickets.
One-down Mominul Haque and second-down Shakib Al Hasan built a worthy partnership scoring together 43 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shakib (16) was caught at the mid-off by Cheteshwar Pujara off Umesh Yadav when the hosts’ total was 82 for the loss of three wickets.
After Shakib’s departure, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim made another notable partnership putting together 48 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim (26) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant off Unadkat when the home side’s score was 130 for the loss of four wickets.
Mominul Haque and fourth-down Litton Das built a valuable partnership contributing together 42 runs in the fifth-wicket stand before Litton Das (25) was caught at the midwicket by Rahul off Ashwin when the red-and-green outfit’s total was 172 for the loss of five wickets.
After Litton’s dismissal, Mominul and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made the last respectable partnership for Bangladesh scoring together 41 runs in the six-wicket stand before Miraz (15) was caught behind by Rishabh Pant off Umesh Yadav when Bangladesh’s score was 213 for the loss of six wickets.
After Miraz’s departure, Bangladesh failed the make any noteworthy partnership.
Nurul Hasan (6) was trapped leg before wicket by Umesh Yadav when Bangladesh’s total was 219 for the loss of seven wickets.
Taskin Ahmed was dismissed by Umesh Yadav for one run when the home side’s score was 223 for the loss of eight wickets.
Mominul Haque, the day’s most successful batter, was caught behind by Rishabh Pant off Ashwin when Bangladesh’s total was 227 for the loss of nine wickets.
Number-11 batter Khaled (0) was dismissed by Ashwin and Bangladesh’s innings came to an end.
Umesh and Ravichandran grabbed four wickets each instead of 25 and 71 runs respectively.
Unadkat bagged two wickets for 50 runs.
