Electing to bat first, India piled up a massive total of 404 runs in their first innings on the second day (Thursday).
In reply, Bangladesh made 150 in their first innings on the third day (Friday).
Later, India declared their first innings scoring 245 for the loss of two wickets on the third day and set a target of 513 runs to win for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh trailed by 241 runs and they had four wickets.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 42 for the loss of none.
Openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan resumed their second innings with the over-night score of 25 and 17 runs respectively.
Shanto and Zakir Hasan contributed together more 82 runs on the fourth day before Shanto was caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant off Umesh Yadav when the hosts’ score was 124.
Zakir Hasan notched up an exact 100. His patient 224-ball innings saw 13 fours and a sixer. Zakir was the fourth Bangladesh batter, who hit a century in his debut. Earlier, Aminul Islam Bulbul, Mohammad Ashraful and Abul Hasan of Bangladesh scored century in their debut. Bangladesh’s Zakir Hasan etched his name in the folklore of Test cricket by becoming the only second opener to hit a century on debut in the fourth innings of the cricket elite format.
In the 145-year history of Test cricket, only one batter could achieve the feat-Leonard Baichan, the West Indies opener who played an unbeaten 105 runs in the fourth innings against Pakistan in Lahore in 1975.
Baichan was not a famous name in cricket history but thanks to Zakir Hasan, his name came to the light even though the record that was in his procession for 47 years is now being shared.
Zakir’s extraordinary feat came on day four of the first Test against India as Bangladesh is fighting to save the Test. Although it looked unlikely.
Shanto hit a sparkle 67. His 156-ball knock had seven fours.
After Shanto’s dismissal, one-down Yasir Ali (5) was bowled out by Axar Patel when the home side’s score was 131 for the loss of two wickets.

Zakir Hasan and second-down Mushfiqur Rahim built another notable partnership adding together 35 runs in the four-wicket stand before Zakir was caught at the first slip by Virat Kohli off Ravichandran Ashwin when the hosts’ score was 208 for the loss of four wickets.
After Zakir’s departure, Mushfiqur Rahim (23) was bowled out by Patel when Bangladesh’s total was 234 for the loss of five wickets.
Fifth-down Nurul Hasan (3) was stumped out by Rishabh Pant off Patel when Bangladesh’s total was 238 for the loss of six wickets.
