Noman Mosharef :
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold its final divisional rally at Golapbagh play ground in the capital today (Saturday) amid crackdown on its leaders and activists.
The detective branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) picked up BNP’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas from their respective residences in the dead of night on Friday.
On Wednesday, one BNP activist was killed and 60 others injured as police opened fire following a clash between the party activists and cops at Nayapaltan in Dhaka.
Police have arrested thousands of BNP activists in a crackdown in the last month as the party was gearing up to hold December 10 rally in the capital. More than 1,300 of them were arrested Tuesday, according to a statement from the police. On Wednesday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was arrested, along with 300 other party leaders and activists in separate cases, filed in connection with Nayapaltan clash.
Meanwhile, a good number of BNP leaders and supporters across the country gathered at Golapbagh playground in Dhaka soon after the party got the final nod to hold the rally there.
While paying a visit to the rally venue, it was found that thousands of BNP supporters have started gathering there from Friday afternoon to join the party’s 10 December rally.
Leaders and activists of BNP were seen marching towards the venue in groups chanting anti government slogans.
“The government has created obstacles to hold all divisional mass rallies but could not. As part of the efforts they also tried to foil the Dhaka’s grand rally, but finally failed,” Advocate Mrida Nazrul Islam, assistant secretary of publicity and publication affairs of BNP Shariatpur district unit, told The New Nation.
He said 10-15 lakh BNP men will join the Dhaka’s rally and we will start our movement to de-throng the government by ballot.
The leaders from Noakhali, Cumilla, Cox’s Bazar and Barishal have also talked with the reporter from the rally venue.
Besides, BNP called on all parties who are ready to hold simultaneous movement against the government to join the rally.
Earlier, the DMP approved BNP’s final divisional rally at Golapbagh on 26 conditions.
In a notice issued Friday (9 December), DMP said the BNP are allowed to conduct the rally between 12 Noon-4:30pm at Golapbagh playground Saturday while following the specific conditions.
Of the 26 conditions by police, others include limiting activities within the venue, deploying adequate volunteers during the rally, installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the venue, installing metal detectors for checking the delegates and to abide by Covid safety guidelines while holding the rally.
The BNP men were also instructed not to set up loudspeakers and projectors outside the venue, not to gather on roads adjacent to the venue, not to broadcast any speech or display any content or caricature that may hurt religious sentiment and not to carry blunt objects like sticks and rods.
The DMP, in its list of conditions, also prohibited the BNP from delivering instigating speech or distributing such leaflets and marching towards the venue with processions.
The party leaders and activists must assemble at the venue two hours before the rally starts, said the DMP letter.
The BNP, earlier in the day, announced the venue for their final divisional rally in Dhaka slated for Saturday at Golapbagh playground, which is located near Sayedabad bus terminal.
BNP Vice Chairman Dr AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed the matter following a meeting with the chief of the Detective Branch of the DMP, Harun Or Rashid.
Earlier, a two-member BNP delegation comprising AZM Zahid Hossain and Law Affairs Secretary Kayser Kamal went to the DMP headquarters to try to end the impasse over the venue for the party’s rally in Dhaka.
The highly expected December 10 grand rally is set to be started at 11:00 am, said BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain in a press briefing at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office on Friday.
Dr Mosharraf said a 10-point charter of demands including release of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, next general election under a non-party neutral caretaker government will be announced from the party’s mass rally at Golapbagh ground.
He said, “We will announce a charter of demands from the rally to oust the present Awami League government from power through ballot.”
The BNP leader also said that a letter has been sent to police to ensure safety and security in and around the rally venue.
Law enforcement agencies also beefed up security in and around the rally venue to avert any untoward situations.
During a visit to the field, Farid Uddin, Commanding Officer of Rapid Action Battalion-10, said they found some loopholes in security as there are some high rise buildings and under-construction buildings around the field.
Both police and RAB members will try to tackle those risks, he said.
Earlier around 2:00pm, a team led by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq went to visit the venue.
BNP wanted to hold its Dhaka divisional rally in front of its party office in Capital’s Nayapaltan area but they didn’t get the approval.

Moreover, Bangladesh Sanmilito Peshajibi Parishad (BSPP) leaders have pledged to make the BNP’s mass rally for Saturday (December 10) a success.
The BSPP leaders held demonstration on the Jatiya Press Club premises in the capital on Friday (December 9) protesting the attack on BNP’s central office at Nayapaltan, killing and mass arrest of the BNP leaders and workers at Nayapaltan on Wednesday.
