Onion, coarse rice and milk powder prices hiked

The common people have not yet got respite from price hiking of daily essentials.
The market sources said that the onion price has been increased again by Tk five per kg while the rice prices also increased again.
“We sold per kg of locally produced onion at Tk 40 last week, but now we are selling those at Tk 45 to 50 per kg,” said Alimuzzaman, a trader of Jurain kitchen market in the capital on Saturday.
Traders of Jatrabari, Dayagonj, Hatirpool, Rampura and other kitchen markets said so.
“We sold onion at Tk 40 or slightly less per kg in the last several weeks. But the price rises suddenly. We are now selling it at Tk 50 per kg from the last several days,” said Abdul Aziz, a trader in Hatirpool bazaar.
As per the traders’ statements, per kg onion price has been increased by Tk five to 10 in different markets.
Besides, the prices of coarse rice also increased again in this week at Tk three per kg.
The price of coarse rice rose by 1.98 percent as per the TCB’s market survey data.
The data showed that per kg of coarse rice was sold at Tk 48 to Tk 53 last week but now it is being sold at Tk 55 per kg.
Meanwhile, the medium quality rice prices also have been hiked by Tk five to six per kg.
“Per kg of middle quality rice has been sold at Tk 54 to Tk 55 in the last week, but are now selling at Tk 55 to Tk 60 per kg,” said Alimuzzaman, a trader from Dayagonj bazaar.
He said the price of essentials are now hiking frequently. Besides the rice and onion, the prices of milk powder also have increased in markets in this week.
As per the market report of the government institution Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), prices of milk powder have been increased by Tk 30 to 50 per kg in the past several days.
TCB collects data of the Dano, Diploma, Fresh and Marks milk powder brands from the markets.
Traders are now selling Dano milk powder at Tk 860 to 900 per kg while it was sold at Tk 830 to 850 per kg in the last weeks.
On the other hand, the shopkeepers are selling Diploma milk powder at Tk 830 to 850 which was sold at Tk 820 per kg in the last week.
The Fresh milk powder has been selling at Tk 820 to 840 per kg which was sold at Tk 800 to 810 per kg in the last week.
Meanwhile, the Marks milk powder is being sold at Tk 800 to 820 which the traders sold at Tk 750 to 775 in last week.
A trader from the capital’s Motijheel area said that the supply of the milk powders fell shortage in the last week.
“Now the supply becomes normal but the companies hiked the prices of the item from Tk 20 to Tk50 per kg,” said the trader.
Consumers in different markets expressed their agony saying the price hiking of daily essentials have made their lives difficult.
