The leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) sought support of the Bangladesh police in order to maintain law and order situations in the apparel sector.
Police have a key role to play in supporting the next phase of the country’s economic development through maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the industrial areas as it is a prerequisite for smooth functioning of industries, they added.
The BGMEA President Faruque Hassan made the call in a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun at the latter’s office in the city on Thursday.
He expressed thanks and gratitude to the Police for providing their support and cooperation to the RMG industry by maintaining law and order situations and assuring security in the garment sector.
He sought cooperation of the IGP to gear police vigilance on Dhaka-Chattogram highways to stop the theft of readymade garments goods during transportation.
Such stealing incident is not only cause of financial loss to the RMG exporters, but also creates a bad image among buyers, the BGMEA chief added.
“BGMEA has been making committed efforts to brighten the image of Bangladesh and the RMG industry globally. As part of the efforts, BGMEA has recently organized the Made in Bangladesh Week to promote Bangladesh and the apparel industry internationally,” Faruque said.
He expressed thanks to all the government departments including Police for extending cooperation in organising the mega event which was attended by a stakeholders from home abroad.
The BGMEA president also called for support of the Police to keep the roads and highway free from traffic jam, especially in Dhaka and Gazipur areas where large number export-oriented garment factories and other industries are located.
The IGP was also given an overview of the future priorities of Bangladesh’s apparel industry including strong emphasis on skills and efficiency enhancement, technological upgradation, and diversification of products, especially non-cotton and technical textiles.
They had discussions about the overall situation of the RMG industry, including its current challenges and prospects.
