Dengue kills 6 more, 559 hospitalised

Dengue fever claimed six more patients’ lives in the past 24 hours till Saturday morning across the country, a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
The latest fatalities have taken the death toll to 226 this year.
Of the deceased, four died in Dhaka city, one each in Chattogram and Barishal districts, DGHS said.
Meanwhile, a total of 559 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country during the same period.
Of them, 320 were in Dhaka and 239 in other places outside the capital city.
4 total of 52,161 patients with the mosquito born disease were admitted to hospitals this year.
The data showed that 2,724 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals currently across the country and 1,552 were admitted to hospitals in the capital city with dengue fever.
The yearly death toll due to dengue hits all-time high this year that has about one and a half months to go.
According to the DGHS data, a total of 33,751 patients or 64.71 per cent of this year’s total hospitalised patients were reported in Dhaka city.
Among the fatalities from dengue this year, 135 died in Dhaka city, one each in Narsingdi and Madaripur districts, 55 in Chattogram division, 11 in Khulna, 10 in Barishal, six in Rajshahi and six in Mymensingh divisions. Meanwhile, Bangladesh is being hit hard by a recurrence of an outbreak of dengue, the disease that is endemic to the country.
Doctors and health experts say that measures taken by the city corporations and other authorities are not proving to be effective.
The publicity and drives carried out by the authorities to destroy larvae of Aedes mosquito are proving to be inadequate.
Dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh exceeded all previous records in 2019, mostly in the capital city of Dhaka. A total of 101,354 dengue cases with 179 dengue-related deaths were officially recorded.
