Govt to procure 12,500 tonnes sugar from Brazil

The government will import 12,500 tonnes of sugar at a cost of Tk 66 crore from Brazil for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), a subordinate body of the Commerce Ministry.
 Apart from this, the Industries Ministry will procure 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer from local company Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Ltd (Kafco) at Tk191.03 crore, 30,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea from Muntajat of Qatar at a cost of Tk201.78 crore under state contract import and the Agriculture Ministry to import 100,000 tonnes of MOP fertilizer at Tk906.69 crore.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Thursday approved some 12 procurement proposals including import of sugar and fertilizer.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal presided over the virtual meeting while other members of the committee attended it.
Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Sayed Mahbub Khan briefed reporters after the meeting and said the day’s meeting approved a total of 12 proposals.
The Commerce Ministry has placed a proposal to import 12,500 tonnes of sugar from Brazil for the state-owned TCB.
Local company JMI Export-Import will supply the sugar from Brazil at a total value of Tk65.98 crore with per tonne costing at U$524.
State marketing agency TCB moved to import the bulk sugar amid the growing price of such essential commodity.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) under the Agriculture Ministry would import 100,000 tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MOP) fertilizer from a Polish company at a contract value of Tk906.69 crore.
The Ministry of Industries placed a proposal to procure 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer from local company Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Ltd (Kafco) at contract value of Tk191.03 crore.
Another similar proposal of the BCIC for the import of 30,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea from Muntajat of Qatar at a cost of Tk201.78 crore under state contract also received the approval of the CCGP.
The Primary and Mass Education Ministry’s proposal to award Tk25.89 crore contract of the National Curriculum and Textbooks Board (NCTB) to different contractors for printing, binding and supplying 7.5million of Bangla and English version of textbooks for 3d, 4th and 5th grades of students also received the nod of the CCGP, he said.
The committee approved two separate proposals of the Shipping Ministry to award contracts for dredging of different rivers under different lots.
Three proposals of the Roads and Highways Department were placed by the Roads Transport and Highways Division for the meeting which received approval of the committee.
Sayed Mahbub Khan said following a proposal from the Road Transport and Highways Division, the package number SP-01 under the “SASEC Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Development” Project has been awarded to the joint venture of ICT, IRD and SHELADIA to act as consultants with a cost of around Taka 269.88 crore.
Besides, the lot number DS-11 under the package number WP-06 under the “South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Development” Project has been awarded to the joint venture of Enez, Turkey TCCL, Bangladesh with a cost of around Taka 896.82 crore.
Apart from this, the day’s CCGP meeting decided that Synhydro Engineering Bureau 8 Corporation Ltd. China will implement the works of lot number DS-12A under the package number WP-06 in the “SASEC Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Development” Project with a cost of around Taka 576.05 crore.
According to Sayed Mahbub Khan, a contract of Tk576.05 crore will be awarded by the Roads and Highways Department to Sinohydro Engineering Bureau 8 Corporation Ltd., China for lot No-DSA of the package-6 of the SASEC project.
