Eviction drive to continue until free the original Buriganga channel
Staff Reporter :
The eviction campaign, excavation and waste removal activities will continue to free the original Buriganga channel from encroachment until it returns to its original form.
“We have started excavation, demarcation and de-encroachment of Adi Buriganga channel from October. I am visiting this area gain today to see the eviction activities physically. The place where we are standing at the Kalunagar Sluice Gate was completely closed even in October. No river channel or basin was visible here. The environment of the river is visible now as we have freed many establishments from encroachment. There were various factories and buildings including ten-story building. Our eviction drives of demolishing against such illegal structures are still going on,” Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said this during an exchange with media personnel after inspecting the ongoing cleaning, digging and evacuation activities in Buriganga Old Channel on Wednesday.
In response to a question, Taposh said, “We have only started the work. We want to take this work to a good position before the monsoon season because monsoon will hamper the work.
“I believe by next March, the river basin will be a lot more visible,” he said.
“The entire seven kilometers of Adi Buriganga Channel will be freed from encroachment. After freeing the Adi Buriganga channel, we will re-excavate, create walkways, cycle lane and beautifies on both sides of the river channel. It is very difficult and huge task. We just started and it would take some times. But we are hopeful that Dhaka residents will get an aesthetic environment and they will get the river back,” the DSCC Mayor said.
