Bangladesh made an auspicious start in the ICC T20 World Cup (WC) beating Netherlands by nine runs in their first Group-2 match of the ‘Super Twelve’ phase at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart of Australia on Monday.
Sent into bat first, Bangladesh piled up a fighting total of 144 for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then all out Netherlands for 135 off 20 overs.
Bangladesh had a good start as openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar put on together 43 runs in the opening stand before Soumya (14) was caught at the midwicket by Bas de Leede off Paul van Meekeren.
Later, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan built another notable partnership. They scored together 44 runs in the sixth wicket stand before Nurul Hasan (13) was caught at the fine leg by Meekeren off Bas de Leede when Bangladesh’s total was 120 for the loss of six wickets.
Afif Hossain was stumped out by wicketkeeper Scott Edwards off Bas de Leede when Bangladesh’s score was 129 for the loss of seven wickets.
Afif shone with the willow making a superb 38. His 27-ball innings was studded with two sixes and two fours. Opener Shanto hit a respectable 25. His 20-ball knock was laced with four fours.
Mosaddek Hossain remained unbeaten with 20 runs. His 12-ball innings saw two fours and a sixer. Meekeren, Leede bagged two wickets each instead of 21 and 29 runs respectively. Tim Pringle, Logan van Beek, Shariz Ahmed, Fred Klaassen took one wicket apiece.
Later, right-arm pacer Taskin Ahmed bowled extremely well. He captured four wickets at the cost of 25 runs. Taskin was adjudged the Man of the Match. Hasan Mahmud bagged two wickets in the space of 15 runs.
Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan took one wicket each for 29 and 32 runs respectively.
Colin Ackermann and Meekeren fought back against the tight and controlled bowling attack of Bangladesh bowlers.
Colin notched up a marvelous 62. His 48-ball innings had six fours and two sixes.
Meekeren scored 24 from 14 deliveries including three fours and a sixer.
