Govt cancels contractual appointment of former Bangladeshi ambassador to US

Staff Reporter :
The government has cancelled the contractual appointment of the Bangladeshi Ambassador to USA Md Shahidul Islam.
The decision had been made effective from September 1, a gazette notification of the Public Administration Ministry said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said that he had been withdrawn through a regular process.
“He had been withdrawn two months ago. We have already appointed a new Ambassador there. The new ambassador has already been assigned there and is working.
Asked about the cancellation of his contract, he said, “It has been done in a natural process. It is the government’s prerogative how the
appointment of each individual will take place. There is no hard and first rule here. The government does it from time to time.” In reply to another question whether there was any allegation against him, Momen said, “So far I know there was no allegation.”
However, Muhammad Imran is the current Ambassador of Bangladesh to USA. He got appointment at current post on July 13 when he was serving as the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India.
On the other hand, Shahidul, a career diplomat, was appointed as Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA on September 3 in 2020. Before joining the post, he was serving as the Secretary General of BIMSTEC.
Meanwhile, much speculation is going on in the public administration as well as the political landscape about the recent forced retirement of a number of government high officials including police.
