Two people jailed for smuggling endangered owls in Lehgara

A mobile court sentenced two persons for one year imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 for the crime of smuggling endangered western gibbon owls in Chittagong’s Lohagara. On Saturday morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharif Ullah gave the sentence in the mobile court. Convicted Momin (26) is the son of Abdul Jalil of Fatehabad area of Devidar in Comilla district and Md Mazharul (32) is the son of Abdul Majeed of Pennai village in Daukandi of the same district.
It has been reported that on Saturday morning, on the basis of secret information, the two youths were arrested during a raid on the smuggling of owls in a passenger bus at Chunti Jangalia on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway. Later, Lohagara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharif Ullah sentenced both of them to one year imprisonment without labor and a fine of Tk 10,000 as the case of Ulluk trafficking was proved in the mobile court. The owl was later handed over to Chunti Sanctuary Range Officer Mahmud Hussain for handover to Bangabandhu Safari Park, Dulahajar.
