A power failure swept from a transmission line of the national grid (across the Yamuna river), out of which production in the garment sector, which accounts for about 80 percent of the country’s export earnings, were severely disrupted.
The disaster happened on Tuesday (October 4) around 2 pm. Since then most of the areas of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna were Sylhet cut off.
On this day, like other days, the garment factories were open till 5 pm. But the time from 2 pm till closure was dependent on generator. Industry entrepreneurs said that as the cost has increased, the quality of the product has also decreased. At the same time, they urged the concerned to solve the problem quickly.
A director of BKME said, due to the problem of electricity, the production in our factory is being affected. Large production costs are greatly increased where electricity is consumed by generators. However, it is not possible to tell the extent of the damage from noon to the closing of the factory.
But product quality and production will be affected.
In this regard, BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel said that our production is being disrupted due to the electricity problem. Production continued with generators at each factory.
However, if the work is done with a generator, the product quality, production and cost increase. We will appeal to the concerned parties to resolve this issue. If it continues, it will face huge losses.
On the other hand, electricity supply became normal across the country including Dhaka after evening, said the Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.
