AL backed mayor of Bakerganj municipality under Barisal district without taking any approval from concerned authorities filling 300-year old canal constructing drain and culvert.
After visiting the spot it was seen that the upazila area was named after Subedar Aga Baker during end of Mughal period and 25-30 feet wide canal surrounded the Bakarganj municipal town as a branch of Aga Baker canal and connected Sreemanto and Tulatali Rivers since last 300-year.
As it was used for transportations of accused and convicted prisoners to Barisal jail, so later locally known as jail-canal. Lokman Hossain Dakua, Bakerganj upazila AL secretary and municipal mayor constructing drain and culvert over the canal shrinking its wideness to 5-6 feet only, at the cost of Tk.59.60 lakh.
The canal also plays a vital role in disposal of over flooded water saving the town from water logging, even later shrunken to 15-20 feed wide in post-liberation period, said Nannu Mia, a local resident and business man.
It then shrunk to 10-12 feet in last 40 years by filling of encroachers, but now municipality killing that, said 70-year old Amir Hossain of the area.
