Our Kushtia Correspondent :The authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia have closed the university sine die following rowdy protests after the death of a fellow student in a road accident.The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting of the university on Sunday afternoon chaired by IU Vice-Chancellor Dr Abdul Hakim Sarker.After the meeting, Dr Abdul Hakim Sarker told reporters that the authorities closed the university sine die fearing further vandalism on the campus. All the male students have been asked to vacate their respective dormitories by 6:00pm on Sunday while the female students by 10:00am on Monday. Wahiduzzaman Titu, a third year student of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering Department was killed after he was caught between two buses on the campus on Sunday morning.Witnesses said a bus hit Titu from behind when he tried to board another university bus at the main entrance of the university.As he fell on the ground, the bus crushed him under its wheels, leaving him dead on the spot. Immediately after the death, fellow students of IU staged violent protests. The angry students also vandalised and torched at least 30 buses, ransacked the administrative building of the university and clashed with police on the campus.They blocked Kushtia-Khulna highway for three and a half hours. They also hurled brickbats at the residence of Vice-Chancellor but he was at his office at that time.Police charged batons and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the agitated students leaving two students injured.Witnesses said police fired over 150 tear gas shells, rubber bullets and shotgun bullets. At that time police also picked up a student and broke one of his legs, they alleged.But, Proctor Dr Talukder Lokman Hakim refuted the allegation.Meanwhile, transport workers went on a wildcat indefinite strike in Khulna division protesting the student agitation that damaged at least 30 buses.”We have enforced the strike demanding compensation for the damaged vehicles. We will continue the strike until the university authorities do not meet our demand,” said Hasan Abul Fazal, general-secretary of Kushtia Bus-Minibus Owners Association.
